New York Income Tax 2026
New York has a graduated income tax for 2026. The standard deduction is $8,000 (single) / $16,050 (married filing jointly). Graduated tax, 9 brackets, 3.9% to 10.9%. FY2026 budget (Gov. Hochul) cut the lowest five bracket rates by 0.1 pt for tax year 2026 (with another 0.1 pt cut scheduled for 2027): the four lowest brackets are now 3.9%/4.4%/5.15%/5.4% and the fifth bracket is 5.9%. Top three high-income brackets (9.65%/10.3%/10.9%) remain in effect through 2032 under the 2024 extension. LOCAL INCOME TAXES: New York City residents pay an additional NYC personal income tax (roughly 3.078%-3.876% graduated) on top of state tax; Yonkers residents pay a resident income tax surcharge equal to 16.75% of net state tax. Standard deduction: $8,000 single, $16,050 MFJ ($3,100 if claimed as a dependent; $8,000 married filing separately; $11,200 head of household). NY also offers personal/dependent exemptions ($1,000 per dependent; no personal exemption for the filer/spouse) plus various credits. RETIREMENT/SS: Social Security benefits are fully exempt from NY tax; federal/NY government and certain public pensions are fully exempt; private pension and other retirement income up to $20,000 per recipient (age 59.5+) may be excluded.
