Montana Income Tax 2026

Montana has a graduated income tax for 2026. The standard deduction is $16,100 (single) / $32,200 (married filing jointly). Two-bracket graduated tax on ordinary income (incl. wages) under HB 337 (2025 session), effective tax year 2026. Top marginal rate cut from 5.9% (2025) to 5.65% in 2026; scheduled to fall further to 5.4% in 2027. Lower 4.7% bracket: Single/MFS up to $47,500, MFJ up to $95,000, Head of Household up to $71,250. Since the SB 399 reform Montana starts from federal taxable income and no longer computes its own standard deduction, so it effectively uses the federal standard deduction; Tax Foundation 2026 lists $16,100 single / $32,200 MFJ (matches 2026 federal amounts). No personal exemption. No local/city income taxes in Montana. Long-term capital gains taxed at separate, lower rates (3.0% / 4.1%), NOT in the ordinary-income brackets above. Montana exempts a portion of Social Security per federal taxability rules. Montana EITC increases to 20% of the federal EITC beginning tax year 2026.
